Nagpur Travel Information

This city, the headquarter of the Nagpur Division and district is situated on the South Central Railway. The city of Nagpur was founded at the beginning of the 18th century by the Gond Raja Bakht Buland. The city then flourished with the growth of the Bhonsla. Kingdom and was considerably improved by the rulers of the Bohul dynasty. This is the second capital of Maharashtra and also known as orange city.

Places of Interest

Nagardhan :
Nagardhan is an old town and was formerly of considerable importance as it gave its name to the district. It was founded by a Suryawanshi King, but Mr. Hiralal supposes it to have been established by a King named Nandivardhan belonging to the Shail Dynasty. There is a fort said to have been built by the Bhonslas with brick walls.

Nagzira :
The Nagzira wild life sanctuary situated in the Bhandara District. Endowed with excellent natural forest. The abundance of vegetal cover and presence of small and big water bodies. This is a very rich habitat, where you can see gaur, the largest of world's cattle, Sambar, Deer, Chousingha, Sloth bear, Nilgai, Barking deer, wild dogs, leopard or tiger, panther etc.

Nawegaon Bandh :
Nawegaon, Vidarbha's most popular forest resort, is the ultimate adventure spot. It is said to have been built by Kolu Patel Kohil in the beginning of the 18th century. There is picturesque lake set in the midst of hill ranges with watch towers that enable you to view wildlife. Make sure you visit the deer park, the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, the three beautiful gardens and children's park. Almost 60% of the birds species found in Maharashtra have been recorded in Nawegaon. You may see the leopard, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, chital and the langur.

Nawegan Khairi :

Pavnar :
Pavnar is historical village in the Wardha district. It is situated on the bank of river Dham. Pavnar is one of the oldest settlements in the Wardha district and is supposed to be named after a legendary Rajput King Pawan. Of the modern places to have been invested with sanctity are the Gandhi Kuti and the Paramdham Ashram of Vinobaji, the Sarvodaya leader who launched the bhoodan movement.

Ramtek :
The story goes that Shri Ram rested here a while with Laxman and Sita. Hence, the name. It was here that the prolific Sanskrit poet Kalidas wrote his epic Meghdootam. Besides the Shri Ram Temple and the Kalidas Memorial, there are Ramgiri Hill and Ramsagar lake.

Pauni :
Pauni is situated on Wainganga river. Many a legend are current about Pauni and one such considers the town as an old one and well peopled in the days when the greater part of the district was an impenetrable wilderness. The name is derived from the mythical king Pawan. The excavations carried out have proved that Pauni was a well known centre of Buddhism in the ancient times. Its antiquities go back to Pre-Ashokan times. Within the town is an old fort with walls consisting of loose dressed stones of a large size. Among the shrines, the temple of Murlidhara is the most important.

Sewagram :
Sewagram is an important village in Wardha District. Its original name was Shegaon but Gandhijis selecting it as a centre of his social service work changed its name to Sewagram is the epitome of Gandhiji's teachings of simplicity and truth. There is also Gandhi Ashram, Gyan Mandir.

Totladok :
The Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru National Park is situated in this area. It is surrounded by Satpuda hills providing a pleasant climate. This National Park is best known for animal viewing, bird watching and trekking. There is also situated a hydroelectric project a joint venture of Govt. of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

Adasa :
A small village in the Nagpur District. The village has osme historical temples. One of them is the Ganapati temple. The image of Lord in it is of a huge monolithic stone. On a hill near the village lies a temple of Mahadeo with three lingas, which are Swayambhoo (believed to have come forth from the ground).

Bhadravati :
Bhadravati or Bhandak is a large flourishing village. Its ancient name was Bhadravati which was later changed to Bhandak. Today it is better known as place of religiously significant for the jains than for its historical identity. The temple was very well maintained with its floors paved with marbles.

Markanda :
Markand is a smal village situated on the left bank of the Vainganga river and is known as a place of pilgrimage. The Markanda is supposed to derive its name from Sage Markandeya and second from a beautiful group of temples including the one housing Siva Linga which Markandeya is believed to have worshipped. There are nearly twenty four temples in the group. There are no inscriptions to tell their age but their style is similar to that of the temples of Khajuraho.
